I’m starting something new here at CrimsonCast, a post race column after every INDYCAR race, utilizing flag communication to make each of my points! So come back after every race for The Second Victory Lap here at CrimsonCast.
Yellow Flag – Below is my DVR description of the race (I have AT&T U-Verse). It cracked me up that the fact they decided to mention was that Danica will be the only Wisconsin born driver in the field. Does AT&T think that will get people more excited for this race? Also, doesn’t Danica normally list her hometown as Roscoe, Illinois? Now she gets to have TWO home states? Who does she think she is, Abe Lincoln? Black Flag –This goes to INDYCAR, IRL, CART and all the other open wheel sanctioning bodies that came before it, for not creating a Triple Crown or Grand Slam series of races over the past 100 years. With the history of the Milwaukee Mile, it would seem that it could have been part of a Triple Crown series with the Indianapolis 500 and maybe Texas, because of the great racing. I still think there is time to create something like this.
Yellow Flag – I have never been a fan of the term “marbles”. Seems like it gets mentioned 45,983 times in each oval race. Although it was fun and hokey when Jack Arute was in his performance pit segment actually walking on marbles. Miss the un-intentional comedy Jack!
Red Flag – ABC did a nice job of trying to create a rivalry in the pre-race between Dario & Will, because of Dario’s comments about the Texas race format. But I think that Dario was really mad at the INDYCAR series and not Will. Seems that there isn’t much of a rivalry between those two.
Yellow Flag – Every time I watch a race with someone who is not a regular INDYCAR fan, they always think that Will Power, is a fake name. Then watching his Verizon commercial today with the crazy jet pack ending got me thinking. They should really play along with his name and give him a “Most Interesting Man in the World” type campaign. While we are on the topic of commercials, it’s nice to see Honda advertising for the series. But why do they only run them during the INDYCAR races (I have never seen this ad during any other programming)? I’m not an expert on advertising, but it seems that most people who are watching the race today would already be familiar with most of the major sponsors of the series. Why wouldn’t Honda want to advertise on other programs also? Try to get new eyeballs on their brand and the series? Seems like you already have the INDYCAR fans pretty well covered with Honda signage at all races. Yellow Flag – Full disclosure, I’m a big Tony Kanaan fan – Last year TK almost always had an in-car camera. This season, I’m not sure he has had one yet? Why did ABC & VS go away from him? Is KV putting him on camera probation? Yellow Flag – Light crowd today at The Milwaukee Mile.
Yellow Flag -First lap spin by Ryan Hunter Reay. RHR’s car did the same that TK’s was doing last year during Indy qualifying. I’ve said it before, but something is seriously wrong with the Andretti Autosport team. If Danica leaves for NASCAR and takes her Go Daddy money with her, this could be a one car team next year. (Question for another time, but who would get that seat? Would it be the ghost of Marco Andretti? Given his finishes and TV time this year, I’m not even sure he is in the series) If that does happen to AA, who becomes the next team to challenge Penske & Ganassi? Sam Schmidt had a great month of May, but if you look at the whole season, my money would be on KV. Maybe letting TK walk and not working with him to find another sponsor was the best move for TK and the worst for AA.
Green Flag – Must mention a GREAT move by Ryan Briscoe to get around RHR! He has skills for someone who has seemly been on the hot seat ever since he got signed by Penske
Red Flag – Simona de Silvestro. She is due to catch a break at some point. Right?
Green Flag – Dario giving JR Hildebrand the “INDYCAR Flip-Off”, throwing his hand up during a pass. I love when these guys do that. I’m always amazed that they can still control the car with one hand, are SO pissed that they take the risk and finally that the other guy can take his eyes of the road in front and notice the flip-off.
Green Flag – Dixon’s spotter saying “Fucking Sato” and ABC falling asleep at the delay button. I actually didn’t notice it the first time. But instead of just letting it slide, Marty Reid had to make it a bigger deal and apologize to our delicate ears. So of course, the first thing I did was rewind the DVR and listened again and again and again. If you missed it, video is below (It is at about the 40 second mark). You can also click here as I also pulled the audio of just the “Fucking Sato” in case you want to use it as a ring-tone. But before we get to that Sato video, why can’t we get a reply of the Dixon-Sato mix-up that cased this quote? We saw 4 replays of Sato hitting a crew member, but it looks like Sato originally went into the wrong pit stall AND hit Dixon’s car. But as @PressDog would say on his blog, this is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!
Black Flag – ABC can’t stop pimping the double file re-starts at lap 80. They even have a pre-loaded video segment with TK, talking about the double file re-starts. Then they go to commercial break and promptly miss the double file re-start. This is moments after they let the F-Bomb fly on live tv? Who is producing this ABC? The monkey from Cannonball Run II?
Yellow Flag – I hate seeing JR Hildebrand in the wall again. Did notice it looked like he turned into the wall at the last second. Most drivers seem to take their hands off the wheel when they are about to wreck. The Indianapolis 500, hurting his ACL, now this. Can this kid catch a break? Need to check if he & Simona are both Cubs fans.
Black Flag – If JR & Simona can’t catch a break, then Dario has had a horseshoe up his ass for the last 3 years. If JR can’t catch a break, Dario seems to get NOTHING but breaks in the last 3 years. He hits another team’s equipment, yet doesn’t get a penalty? I thought this was a pretty cut & dry rule. Does Dario have naked pictures on someone in the INDYCAR administration?
Green Flag – Sunoco is now a partner and has ads to prove it! Great news. I keep up with a good number of INDYCAR outlets, yet this was news to me? Did I miss a memo?
Black Flag – I really like James Hinchcliffe, as he is one of the few drivers who isn’t afraid to show some personality. But I hate the fact that he is in car number 06, when Ryan Briscoe is in car number 6. Can’t we agree this is annoying, and confusing for those new to the sport. There are 99 numbers to pick from, why do we have to double the same number. There are lots to go around.
Yellow Flag – TK spins. Damn. Given that he was taking Dario late in every stint, and Helio had a tire issue brewing, I really thought he was in position to win this race. Would have been a great win for KV Racing. Would not have guessed that the last KV car running and not wrecked out would be Sato.
Checkered Flag – It’s very tough for me to be objective, because I’m not a Dario fan at all. So before I get into my thoughts, let me say that there is no question that Dario is the best all around driver in the series now and he has been on a killer run since he came back into INDYCAR. With that out of the way, as mentioned before, Dario always seems to have everything go his way. Sure there is a fuel mistake during the Indy qualifying, and a gear box problem during Iowa last year, but besides that, things always seem to break in his favor. Today, TK had the better car, yet TK was very un-TK like and spun out. I still have no idea how Sato can hit his own tire and have to serve a penalty and Dario hits ANOTHER team’s tire and nothing, nada. Now onto more personal feelings. It always seems to me that Dario, and to a lesser degree Dixon, always seem to make their wins as boring as possible. This race was a bit of a yawner while Dario was leading. Then Kanann passed him, it got interesting……then Dario takes back the lead and cue the yawns and checkered flags. Dario also has the ability to always whine about something during his interviews. I agreed with him at Texas, but today after he wins, he can’t get three words out before he starts digging into Helio for blocking. I’ll all for feuds and drivers having more personality, but dude, you just won a race. Plus bitching about blocking is pretty lame. It’s part of racing, just like how Scott Dixon blocked Will Power and helped you win last week in Texas. Remember that win? Another time you were bitching during your victory circle interview. The guy is whiny and pissed during interviews in victory lane. He wins & dominates a ton of races each year. He has won 2 Indianapolis 500’s. He is banging a hot movie star. He is a very handsome guy himself. WHY THE HELL IS HE SO PISSED?
