The next few weeks are going to be very hard to write this column without repeating the same general theme, what else did we really expect?
I think our defense actually played pretty well against Illinois, and it is showing signs of life and culture change at times. On this day it was our offensive that let us down. After seeing Dusty Kiel & Tre Roberson play a bit, it really got me thinking, how awful must Adam Follett must be, that he is behind these guys on the depth chart.
It is fairly obvious that Dusty Kiel isn’t the answer for anything this season or moving forward. So why don’t we just give Roberson a chance to run the offensive a bit while EWB is out?
What bothers me is the fact that we are still playing and coaching so conservatively. We have a 4th & Goal on the 2, and we kick a FG. It reminds me of the line from the HBO Mini-series Band of Brothers where a solider basically says that the way to mentally prepare for battle is to realize that you are already dead. We should think and coach the same way for our games, we have already lost. So let’s coach that way. Maybe we try a game without punting? Play a true Freshman at QB for the whole game. Again, if we assume we have already lost, what is there to lose with taking some chances?
Last thought on the QB situation, please STOP talking about how young QB struggles shows how much we miss a guy like Ben Chappell. I heard a lot of this after the game. Yes, Ben Chappell was good, but is everyone forgetting that in his Junior & Senior year, when he was an “experienced” QB, he lead this team to a 2-14 B1G record. It is NOTHING like going from Peyton Manning to Matt Painter. From the way some people were talking about Chappell after the game, you would have thought that we just came off two B1G Title years. Ben Chappell had a good arm, but didn’t lead this team to many B1G wins, let’s not forget that.
Current Record – 1-5 (0-2)
TJH Projected Final Record – 2-10 (1-7)
I still hold out hope that we can shock someone this season. I’m just not sure who or how.
Enough from me. What are your thoughts?
