Well, that wasn’t so bad, was it? After a slow start against the Horizon League’s Wright State Raiders, IU bounced back in a big way, running away with a 67-44 victory. Some immediate thoughts:
1. Verdell Jones III. The improvement is immense. The body control and ball placement he displayed throughout the contest were impressive, particularly given his having been in a walking boot just a couple weeks ago. Having the ball go through VJ3 frees up so much else in the offense — it allows Hulls to spot up and shoot, it allows Creek to cut without the ball, and it allows Watford to receive a regular supply of balls in the high post. This team’s success this season is going to flow directly through Verdell.
2. It’s still obvious that Maurice Creek isn’t at full speed. Fortunately, his teammates are picking up the slack. Until he gets his full range of motion back, it’s going to be hard for Creek to be effective against the regular zone defenses that IU will see throughout the season. It wasn’t an accident that when Creek went out in the first half with two fouls and Oladipo came in, the Wright State zone collapsed. Cutting, driving, athleticism — that’s going to be the key to IU not having to face a cavalcade of zone defenses. Oladipo is going to be hard to keep off the floor in those cases. Creek will be hard to keep off the floor as well, but it’s gonna be a while still before he gets to that point.
3. The one thing that concerns me is that a patient, well-coached opponent that’s hitting shots is going to provide a huge obstacle for the Hoosiers, until we learn to cut down on turnovers. Granted, several of the turnovers tonight were the direct result of terrible block/charge calls by the jackasses who were carrying whistles tonight. But until IU gets the ball control side of things figured out…trouble. That’s okay. That’s what the next four games are for.
Random note for the next game: Sean Woods coaches MVSU? Interesting.
