I’m posting a post-race column after every INDYCAR race, utilizing flag communication to make each of my points! So come back after every race for The Second Victory Lap here at CrimsonCast.
Saturday night my wife & I celebrated our 6th Wedding Anniversary with a nice BBQ at some friends house, so I am watching this on DVR on Sunday afternoon. Since I have 2 weeks until our next race, and over a month till our next oval, I figured this would mean that I actually have to wait about 12 hours less than everyone who watched live on Saturday night!
As always, I write this as I watch it. On to the flags!
Green Flag – Takuma Sato for winning the pole after losing his father and going back to Japan this week for the funeral. Milwaukee to Japan to Iowa is some TOUGH travel, without having to do it for your father’s funeral. Very sad story, hope he has a great run today. Sadly, if I had to bet between a podium finish or crushed up against the wall, I’m putting my money on wall. I hope I’m wrong.
Red Flag – Dario missed a golden opportunity to talk smack about Rick Mears in his pre-race interview with Kevin Lee, when Kevin asked him what it was like to tie Mears’s win record. Dario might as well play up this image as a bad guy and just go for it full throttle. He could even hire LeBron’s PR team that gave the green light to “The Decision”. If you are going to be a heel, go for it full WWF style like Macho Man Randy Savage did when he feuded with Hulk Hogan over Miss Elizabeth. We miss you Macho Man!
Black Flag – Mike Conway’s title sponsor for this race is……..Andretti Autosport? They couldn’t get a main sponsor for this race? At Milwaukee, Conway was driving with DHL, which is normally Ryan Hunter Reay’s sponsor.
Something is seriously up with this team and their sponsors. If/when Danica leaves and takes Go Daddy with her, they could be down to a 2 or 1 car team. I’ve said it before, but I think that they are no longer the 3rd best team in this league. I think that KV is going to take that spot!
Green Flag – Good piece on Charlie Kimball & his father. I really like Charlie, and his story with diabetes and how he manages it. If he could string together some better finishes, I think he could become one of the most popular drivers in the series. He has a lot going for him, he is American and dealing with a disease (diabetes) that is becoming more prevalent in this country, and seems to have a great title sponsor with Levemir FlexPen. The only thing he is lacking is good results on the track.
Green Flag – With the way his luck has been going lately, happy to see that JR Hildebrand is doing well in Iowa and hasn’t been impaled by corn or some other crazy farm accident.
Yellow Flag – I’m being picky here, but during the Professor B Segment – Did the safety guy have to keep Ed Carpenter’s neck stable after the helmet was off and even during the interview? He did understand that Ed WASN’T just in an accident. But I do appreciate the extra effort!
Also, Professor B (I need to see a diploma) said, “This invention can save YOUR life”. Umm…..probably not. I don’t normally hit a SAFER barrier at 180 mph and have a safety crew following after me. I also don’t have that helmet. But then again, I also don’t drive in the marbles. Now if I did win the Shop Honda Fastest Seat in sports, then I want TWO air bladders!
Green Flag – A few minor issues with getting the right video feed and audio feed with the Pit Walk, but I liked it as most of the interviews were much more relaxed as the drivers weren’t so prepared with all their sponsor plugs. From my understanding this was Dan Weldon’s idea. His comments about JR’s downforce, just by eyeballing the back of the car, were very insightful. He continues to do a GREAT job!
During my next team project at work, I want to be teamed with Robin Miller and Dan Wheldon, because they don’t steal ideas and make them their own. They mentioned quite a few times that this “Pit Walk” idea was from Formula 1. Why must you mention that it isn’t an original idea. Just call it an INDYCAR Pit Walk. Do you think that F1 fans are going to revolt and throw their remotes against the wall?
Yellow Flag – Winner of the Shop Honda Contest is from Iowa and the race is in…………Iowa???? Seems like QUITE a coincidence. Thinking this contest might be a bit rigged! Do they ice the entries that they want to pick a-la David Stern in the 1985 NBA Lottery? Do I need to move to each city for the rest of the season to have a shot at that seat?
Green Flag – Love when you can see the contrails off the tail wings of the car
Blue Flag with Yellow Strip – I’ve said before that I’m a fan of James Hinchcliffe, but it isn’t great when I have NO IDEA what your title sponsor is or what they do. (Looks like Sprott does Asset Management in Canada)
Green Flag – Big props to KV Racing or Geico for paying to put a camera in TK’s car.
Black Flag – It always talked about here at Iowa, but why the hell is there a bump out of Turn 1? It sounds like it was a main reason that James Jakes crashed. Why is it still there? Can’t they get rid of it? Or should we just make this like an Xbox game and add obstacles and water hazards?
New rule, if you have to mention something on the track that is effecting the drivers more than 3 times during a race, it needs to be gone the next year. It would be like if they just had that water fountain dolphin at Long Beach just laying across the track.
Yellow Flag – Power loses a tire during an Indy 500 pit stop and today he is sent straight into Kimbell. Another un-Penske like pit performance for his team. And AGAIN, Dario gets a break with his Championship contender having problems. The Japanese Earthquake was the only thing this year to go against Dario, as it took an oval off the schedule and put another road course, which is better for Power. Surprised Dario hasn’t found a way to complain about the earthquake during an post race interview yet.
Yellow Flag – “There seems to be something wrong with Danica’s car on the re-starts”. Um……..maybe it’s the driver not the car? Have fun in NASCAR in 2012.
Yellow Flag – Helio with the SAME Left rear tire problem. This whole season is becoming Un-Penske like for Penske. Rumor is that Dario has taken one of the horseshoes out of his ass and will be selling it to the highest bidder in the garage area after the race.
Yellow Flag – To bad for Will Power. Our 3rd wreck tonight due to that bump after Turn 1. Unless the bump is made of corn or it is sponsored, maybe we look to get rid of that for 2012?
At least this will help Dario in the Championship Chase with Power going out. It’s about time that Dario gets some good luck breaks to go his way. *Tongue planted firmly in my cheek*
Yellow Flag – Is it just me, or is it spooky that before the race they show how the safety crew uses the air bladder to take off the helmet in case of a neck injury, then we see it here tonight with the Saavedra wreck, when we haven’t seen it used all season. Maybe Professor B (Still need to see a diploma) can show me some lottery numbers before the next power ball drawing.
Black Flag – TK’s radio chatter about Sato cutting him off. Nice way to repay your teammate who helped you get the pole. Maybe someday TK will have good teammates?? Imagine what this guy could do if he didn’t have to fight his teammates. Do you think he kicks himself 3 or 4 times each day for not taking that seat with Ganassi that Dario is currently in? I say 5.
Black Flag – Another week, another curse word live on a INDYCAR broadcast. Guess that 7 second delay cost a bit to much money for ABC or VS? Personally, I don’t care at all, and think it is silly that we are so repressed that we can’t handle some language during a sporting event. But kudos to Kevin Lee for just moving on and not drawing more attention to it by apologizing over and over for it.
So now we have “fuck” and “shit” in back to back broadcasts. Let’s take some bets on what is next. Ass is 2-1, Prick is 4-1 and Douche Bag is 10-1. But if Dario starts talking about Helio, all bets are off!
Before I post the video, I must say, that even as I was watching it live (on DVR), I said to my wife that Will Power did NOT look or sound like someone who was cleared from his concussion. Think the Medical team gets a red flag on that one. With that, judge for yourself:
Green Flag – Some very aggressive moves from Marco to take first place. I can’t imagine that people like to race with him as he likes to be close, but it also seems to be very unpredictable.
Yellow Flag – Sato in the wall. Just can’t stay out of the wall.
Green Flag – TK takes the lead! Sad to say, but he is doing much better without having to race next to Sato. Shouldn’t be that way with a teammate.
Black Flag – JR Hildebrandt seems to be a bit like a bull in a china shop today.
Green Flag – Great racing between TK and Marco. TK doing a great job pushing Marco up every time he looks on the outside. He is really towing the line between hard racing and blocking. Can Dario complain for Marco after the race?
Checkered Flag – Not a fan of Marco at all, but enjoyed seeing someone other than Dario win. To bad TK couldn’t pull it out, but gotta hand it to Marco as he really made some great moves in the end. Don’t forget that Marco is still VERY young, so when people talk about how he is a washout, they need to wait at least another 10 years. He could easily turn it on and take over this series. He has shown that he has skills, and with his name he will always be able to get sponsors. As many have said before, having him relevant is good for this series.
It’s to late to throw out another flag, but did anyone else notice that Dario said that he “allowed” Scott Dixon and JR to pass in the last few laps. I have full-on Dario hate going on now, so I’m viewing everything through that prism, but come on man! At least give them credit for passing you. I’m telling you Dario, go full WWF heel. Start wearing all black. Maybe bring a folding chair to driver introductions and just bang someone over the head? Either go all out or shut up!
Hope you enjoyed that tight side by side racing at 180 mph, because you aren’t going to see it for over a month, as we now have 3 road/street races. Six of the next seven races are road/street races. I feel like we just got a few ovals under our belt, and now I look ahead and see we only have THREE left this season!! That needs to be changed for next year in a bad way!
So get ready for watching a lot of single file racing and high powered cars going 30 mph around tight turns. I might as well go out and watch some traffic at the round-about outside my subdivision.
