I’m posting a post-race column after every INDYCAR race, utilizing flag communication to make each of my points! So come back after every race for The Second Victory Lap here at CrimsonCast.
As always, I write this as I watch it. On to the flags!
Yellow Flag – I have been going to Toronto for work once a month since March, and the city has some of the worst traffic I have ever dealt with. This is coming from a guy that regularly drives through Chicago and lived in Houston for 5 years. I can only imagine the traffic nightmare this street course is causing in Toronto today!
Yellow Flag – It took Will Power 25 HOURS to get from Charlotte to Toronto? Penske can’t pony up and get his drivers a ticket on NetJets?
So if this is the best that Penske can offer Will Power, is Helio getting shipped via UPS?
Blue Flag with Yellow Strip – I have always noticed that on his fire suit, Marco has a fairly large spot for the Palms casino. Not sure what Michael is doing with is sponsors, but I have always felt that this would be a great sponsor to grow with INDYCAR. Casinos have A LOT of money to spend, yet I don’t see many of them being the title sponsors in INDYCAR or NASCAR. I have to imagine that even if you can name your WNBA team after your Casino, it still isn’t as good bang for your buck as being the title sponsor of an INDYCAR team.
Green Flag – Great feature piece on James Hinchcliffe. I really think that he is one of the most personable young drivers on the circuit today. Happy to see that he is getting some exposure.
I also liked when he was talking about his driver helmet collection, he mentioned that he had a Paul Tracy helmet, then spent some time talking about his Helio helmet, and how it is weird to have a helmet of a guy you are racing against. I know PT doesn’t have a full season ride, but either that was a slight, or a bad editing job!
Yellow Flag – I do like Will Power and am very happy to see that he seems to be recovered from the hard hit at Iowa. But I must say, I kinda like the Post-Concussion Will Power, speaking without a filter. In the Trackside Podcast, Kevin Lee said that what we saw in the Iowa interview is much more what Will Power is like when he isn’t on camera. I enjoy candor, so I hope we see more of “off-camera” Will, minus the concussions.
Green Flag – Happy to see that the Pit Walk made it back, and that they are not calling it the F1 Pit Walk anymore. I know it might not be the best viewing, but I enjoying watching the split screen and seeing Dan or Robin trying to find another interview. Makes you realize how hard it is to produce something like that.
Black Flag – Jordan John. When you are introduced as “Singing Sensation”, that means you have no hits or platinum records to mention. It’s a sneaky way of saying, “This guy isn’t any good or popular right now”. Using this logic, I should start introducing myself as “Internet Sensation”.
Green Flag – Actual Green Flag! Let’s go racing!
Green Flag – Love the look of the Penske Truck Rental car. I think the Yellow and Blue scheme works well. I enjoyed when Will Power ran that scheme a few years ago. Maybe it brings back memories of the old Pennzoil cars.
Yellow Flag – TK goes into the wall early. Damn. Given that he was joining a new team this year with only weeks before the season, you have to consider this season a success for TK so far. Yet, I still feel like it has been a season of missed opportunities for TK. He was great at Indy, yet in the last stint, he was a bit off pace and might have cost himself a sip of milk. He lost a chance to win at Milwaukee and got beat out by Marco at Iowa. Feels like he should have a win or two this season. Hope this wreck isn’t the start of more bad results for TK.
Yellow Flag – Sato has to be mad that he isn’t going to get the award for first one to wreck out. But by getting into the back of Danica and losing a tire, he was sure trying hard. To bad Ryan Briscoe had to punt TK a few laps earlier!
Red Flag – Lap 22. Yawn. Single file racing at it’s best.
Black Flag – Robin Miller just described turn 1 as a “thrill show” and said that TV doesn’t do it justice. I would have to agree, since I’m fighting to keep my eyes open during this race so far. Not quite what I call a “thrill show” so far today!
Green Flag – Here’s an idea, how about we don’t have side-by-side commercials during these street races, since not much happens. But in return we get ONLY side-by-side commercials during the ovals. Remember those oval tracks? The ones where we have side by side racing and passing for the lead?
Yellow Flag – So the most exciting part of the race so far is that Helio punted Tags into the wall, and that screws Dixon and Power? If the most exciting part of your race is a random wreck, that may not be a great sign for your race. Oh, great to see Dario got MORE good luck and getting to the lead. I want this guy picking my lotto numbers!!
Black Flag – No sponsor for Mike Conway again? They just throw the Andretti twitter handle on the side of the car? Why not at least just throw Dr. Pepper on the car? Kiss their ass a bit and maybe get them as a full time sponsor for next year? Is there a rule against that? Isn’t not like Dr. Pepper would mind getting a car for free. Anything is better than a blank car!
Black Flag – Dario punts Power. Don’t think there was anything intentional, but yet again Dario gets the best of the situation. But wait, what’s this? Dario is going to get an penally? Can’t believe INDYCAR did that! Can’t wait to hear Dario’s take on it. My money is on him being very pissed & whiney!
If you have read any of these recaps, you know I am not a Dario fan at all. So this is tough to write, but I have to admit, I don’t think that Dario did anything wrong in this situation. If there is blame, I think it probably needs to go to Power, as I think he didn’t leave much room for Dario.
Not sure how hitting a tire on pit lane a few weeks back DOESN’T get a penally, yet this does?
WAIT! Now INDYCAR re-read the rulebook and noticed the rule that you are not allowed to penalize Dario. Fantastic.
Yellow Flag – Tags punts Power. Will is having a tough stretch right now. If Dario gets nothing but good luck, Will is getting all the bad right now. I expect to see Dario now coast to a top 5 finish and not push for the win.
Green Flag – Will Power with another classic post race interview, this one without the aid of a concussion. Calling Dario a “dirty racer” and my personal favorite, calling Tags a “wanker”. I’m really liking Will more and more. Sadly, for Will, most of the drivers that I like, such as TK, are the ones that always come up a bit short. Maybe I should start rooting for Dario?
Yellow Flag – It always annoys me when they go side-by-side during a yellow flag. What’s the point? That would be a perfect time to go to a full commercial. Don’t think I need to see cars going in a straight line. If it’s yellow and no cars pitting, there isn’t much to miss.
Black Flag – No love loss in team Ganassi. Dixon really pushed Rahal and caused him to get down into RHR. What I don’t get is how Dario and Dixon are racing super hard when Rahal was up in front, yet once they are 1-2, they stop racing and Dixon doesn’t even seem to want to push Dario. That HAS to piss off Rahal big time!
Checkered Flags – To me, this race showed both reasons why I really don’t like the street & road courses. For the first half of the race, it was a boring follow the leader yawn fest. Then for the last 20 laps, it turned into a wreck-fest, because there are only 1-2 places on the whole course that you can pass and everyone was going for it in the same place. Remember the days when Tony George broke up the sport so we could have more ovals. What the hell happened? It would be like the NFL missing this upcoming season, then playing again in 2012, but having all the same labor issues and starting to talk about a lock-out again. Why did we go through all that pain in the mid-90’s just to be where we are today, with over half road/street courses.
With that, see you in two weeks for another Canadian street course.
